Son needs an interesting fact about Jamaica for his project at school. (please keep it simple and non drugs related - he is 6!)

Flag colours: Black, Green and Gold. Black represents the hardship of the people, Green represents lush vegetation and Gold represents unlimited sunshine.

National Dish: Ackee and Codfish

National Flower: Lignum Vitae

Jamaica also boasts the world's fastest man, Asafa Powell, who has equalled his own world record twice.

National Tree: Blue Mahoe

National Bird: Hummingbird

Ian Fleming wrote his books about James Bond agent 007 while retired in Jamaica. The name "James Bond" comes from the book "Birds of West Indies" written by James Bond.

By the way there's no waterfall in Rick's Cafe, professional divers dive from the tree top growing on the top of the cliff, visitors dive from the cliff.

It's also funny that probably most positive music in the world, reggae, is originating from funeral songs. At least that's where "one drop" rythm is coming from.

Agriculture is also important part of economy after tourism and bauxite. Jamaica is volcanic island with very special soil that makes all fruits much sweeter.

First inhabitants of the island, the arawak indians, called the island Xaymaca ("Land of Wood and Water"). Now some Rastafarians call the island "Jah-mek-ha" which means "Jah Made Her". Also the islans is called Jamrock or Jamdung, but those names have negative meaning.

Jimmy Buffet flew his flying boat off the coast of Jamaica to do some fishing. The military thought he was a drug smuggler so they shot at the plane. He refers to it as the Jamaica Mistaika.

One of the James Bond movies was filmed near Ocho Rios and a shark attack scene was filmed in a pool that can still be seen. Also, Mick Jagger owns a home near Ocho Rios.

For one culturally Jamaica has some of the best sports Athletes in the world, eg; Asafa Powell world record holder of the 100 meters sprint event 9.76 sec,equaled by him twice!.

7th largest natural harbour in the world.(Falmouth capital for Trelawny,first to have piped water before New York city!way back in the day and was well planed and designed in street to street lay out),(More churhes per squre mile than any other country in a community setting).

Ricks Cafe Negril Jamaica there is this waterfall that all visitor's to this spot must jump off ,if u have the guts to do so pretty amazing the water is blue at the bottom of the cliff the thrill from that jump is mind blowing.

Jamaica----no she wanted to go.... ha ha.. Jamaica home of blue mountain coffee regarded as best coffee in the world,captain Morgan ,rum ,pirate, was governor of Jamaica ,and he was welsh.hope it helps

I went to Jamaica last year and came back refreshed and renewed. Beautiful island, people and food. I plan to go back every year.

There is a huge bauxite mine there. It is called the Kaiser Mine and bauxite is the primary ingredient used to make aluminum. Simple enough?
