The only problem is that neither of them have a passport. My parents are the kind of people if they had too much time to think about it they would eventually put other commitments first. I want to be able to spring this on them with minimal time so they can't say no. They would also need a visa i think, how long does it take to get a visa and passport? oh and well live in the UK.??? maybe there's no way i think.

Great Idea.

I would do all the hard work before buying the tickets...

I am not sure if you need to go in person to get the passport but you do need the photos.

Getting those taken could be a challenge - you need to imply that they are needed for some other reason. Not sure how on the ball they are - but you can always tell them that they are needed by you as proof of identity for something you need done. - maybe your work needs them on file, in case, heaven forbid, they were ever needed to be contacted in an event of an emergancy.??

Then there are the forms. i woudl think that you would know all of the information on the forms, ther eis not usually anything to taxing on there - signatures are an issue as i would never dare reccomend forging those.

Time it takes to process is varied but does not usually take that long and you can, i think, pay for a quicker service

once you have it all then get the tickets.

Packing wise - you either need to tell them you are going away, but obviously not telling any details, just so that they pack OR you get someone to do it all for you and have their bags packed for them.

Then it is a case of taxi to the airport, passports presented to them in a nice gift box, together with the tickets and off you go

They don't need visas, but they DO need passports, and they will have to apply for them in person. Therefore, no surprise trip to Canada.
Fly the relatives over to your parents instead. Now THAT would be a surprise!

If you ever find a way to surprise someone without his/her knowing about it...He/She is faking it.
Also, Isn't a passport required in order to get a visa?
Doesn't a visa need photo I.D.?

I think you should buy the plane tickets and surprise them with THOSE rather than the trip itself. Give the tickets to them plenty early so they have a chance to get everything taken care of properly.

After you've spent all that money on the tickets, how can they say no?

WELL THE PASS PORT COULD BE THE BIG PROBLEM UNLESS YOU TELL THEM TO GET ONE FOR A TRIP IN A FEW YEARS TIME BUT THEN SPRING THE SURPRISE AND TELL THEM IT SOONER RATHER THAN LATER!
