For some reason, I choose the second stall. If it is not clean, previous user did not flush, the door is falling off the hinges, not closing, or even lockless- then my next choice is second from the opposite end. At my work place tho- that second from opposite end is made for stick ppl & so is the last stall- then my next alternative is #5. However, I have not waited till one of my specifics is free before I go. I will use another if it's a choice between stick girl stalls or #4. I do not use the HC stall unless that is the only operating toilet- which has been a situation in the past.
This is a very interesting topic! I never really thought about it until I saw your post, that's when I realized my habits....

usually the middle one is used the most. (3) this is because a lot of people believe that if someone has to go bad or is about to puke, they'll go to the first because it's closest, or the last because they hope less people will notice. Generally when there are more stalls, the last one is used less, but the one next to the last is used the least. The middle one is used the most. Odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye, so generally, people go for the ones at odd numbered spots (3, 5, 7, etc.) but 3 seems to be the most pleasing.

I did see something about this ages ago but it related to seating on a train. They hooked up a camera in a train and filmed a row of three side seats to see where ppl would sit. It seems that it depended on the personality type as to where ppl would feel comfortable sitting. I believe it would be the same in your scenario. Shy ppl may choose the furthest stall as it would feel more private away from the main entrance, or possibly even the handicapped toilet. Outgoing ppl may go into the first stall because they couldn't care less about other's coming in and out the main door and the possibility of being heard. Who knows. I have no qualms to go to any of them, but I would choose the closest toilet if I were busting to wee, and the furthest toilet if I were going to stink up the place..blush.

Depending if I am taking my son (who has special needs) to the bathroom. If I do, then I use a handicapped stall. If one isn't available, I look for the cleanest one and ensure it has paper. Another scenario is when I take my daughter to the bathroom. I usually let her lead the way - and just ensure the stall is a clean one & with paper. Otherwise, I usually choose one furthest from the entrance (when I'm alone). In emergency situations, I use the one that is available!

If there are three identical stalls...or even 3 with a 4th being a HC stall, I always choose the 2nd one in. I assume that people will choose the 1st or 3rd to try to ensure no one ends up in the stall next to them.

It depends upon the direction from wich they enter. If they walk in from a door to the left, they'll choose the one on the right. If they walk in from a door to the right they choose the left. The reasoning behind this is that it creates the illusion of intimacy, seclusion and privacy cause it seems that the toilet is in the most "safest" corner so to speak.
Look at a bed that's next to a wall. Most people will cuddle up against the wall where the warmth is.
Or in the bus. People do not only want to sit next to a window to look outside, but also cause it's the most cosy.
We're used to it because the mother's womb is like that.

Having done janitorial work (and I don't know if this qualifies as a scientific study but its mine)The restroom stall that is located next to the wall with only one stall next to it gets the most use or the first one that you come to because there isn't a stall on both sides. I came to this conclusion because the toilet paper runs out the fastest in these 2 stalls.

I think someone is likely to go to the stall they can get to the fastest. So the stall that would be least used would be the last stall, furthest away from the door.

I always go to the last stall, because I assume since people lately are a lot more lazy, no one wants to walk all that way down to the last stall.

I usually use the one that is farther away from the door. Especially if there are big gaps between the stall door and the door hinges.
