Today I went to my local halifax branch to make a deposit into my account, only to be told by the teller that they no longer accept deposits over the counter for my account type. She then said I would have to use the deposit machine with a huge queue even though ALL the tellers where free.
Q1. Have you had the same problem?
Q2. Would you accept this from a bank that's meant to 'give you extra'?
Q3. Do you think this is a way the bank intends to cut its staff by using machines to cut costs?
Q4. Can you recommend a bank other than Halifax?
PLEASE NOTE
This isn't a joke, I have a standard cash card account to which a pay in around 18 grand a year.

I have written a letter of complain which I have sent to the manager of my local branch and also forwarded to head office. I feel I had to do this as so many people DON'T complain just simply take it, as they are to busy with their general lives (I think this is why the bank feel they can get away with it)
Blasin s (sorry if name is incorrect) the machine at the Ashton branch isn't an envelope in the post box job, no its brand new, it counts your cash their and then it also photo copies cheques and prints them out on your receipt. All fine and good but why should I have the cashier service taken away should I want to use it.
This isn't a mistake as the teller gave me a leaflet that she says 'SHOULD' have been enclosed with my latest statement.
If I wanted to take the trouble to upgrade my account then I would take the trouble to upgrade to a better bank, WHICH I NOW INTEND TO DO.

1st of all Halifax is a building society not a bank and if you were paying in that amount of money you would not have a cash account bank with Lloyd's. platinum card holder

I work for the Halifax and you have been told incorrectly or your local branch has interpreted the rules wrong....deposits can be made at the counter but withdrawals £300.00 and under must be made at the ATM machines.
Each branch also has a drop box where you can fill in your account details on an envelope provided...(you can even take some of these envelopes home with you and have it all ready before getting to thebranch )...then just drop the envelope in the post box ..normally situated next to the counter so all deposits are in a secure area...
this box is opened every day some time after 4pm and the funds credited to your account just as if you had handed it to a cashier..
I also wonder why you have not been offered an account upgrade if you have 18k paid into your account a year...ask about upgrading to the high interest current account which has no restrictions on counter services ...
I apologise for the treatment you have had at your local branch...send in a letter of complaint...all i can say is that it wouldn't have happened at my branch.

Your story is very interesting and I think you acted very well, but I am not surprised. Unfortunately in UK, service is fast becoming a forgotten word and all that matters is profit.
The teller who declined to serve you was a fool, because the manager must be watching how much work they have and he will soon do some firing.
In my case, what I hate most is queues. They keep customers in line like animals waiting to be fed, as if their time were of no value, in order for the bank to save a little money. If the bank had enough machines to take the money, I would not mind too much.

You are kidding! I'm with the Halifax and I've never heard of that happening! I just think they're soooooo slooow! I would have made a complaint, they have access to all the Halifax accounts and they wouldn't accept a deposit?! That's bull! I'm so angry for you!
I'm afraid I don't have any other recommendations for another bank, it would depend on what you're looking for from a bank account. I hope you change to a better bank, the Halifax have done nothing but charge me for this and that but because I have so many different accounts with them I can't be bothered changing. I may change my mortgage from them as they charged me £300 admin fees for renewing it! RAGE!
Good Luck!

That's awful. I'm sorry to say this because there are a lot of decent hard working and concentious people that work in banks, but despite their promises all high street banks seem to be two facecd, unreliable and generally pretty shabby outfits. I spend as little time as humanly possible in banks. Thank god for e banking.
I've lost all faith in a banking industry that allows the poorest of our society to be charged £35 for going overdrawn or for returning a direct debit, that gives low income families massive unsustainable credit and that can still get away with the 3 days for electronic bank-to-bank transfers!

Yeah, HSBC, you have to use a machine to even when there is no people in the bank and the teller is sat there doing nothing. All banks want an easy life and make billions in profit for doing NOTHING ! Dam why did i not think of that back in the day. Doh!
