You need the dimensions of the tank. If it's a cylindrical tank lying on its side a table of volume vs inches comes in handy so you don't have to calculate it.

none - you can't get a gallon into an inch.
unless you mean an inch deep - then the dimensions of the container have to be known.

Knowing only the volume of the container is not enough information to give an answer. The container's dimensions must also be known.
