The United States of America is the leader of the free world.
Like it or not.
I try to rationalize the arguement in my head.
As far as I'm concerned I guess I would rather be a hypocrit on this subject.
Radicals don't need to have nuclear weapons.
It's like saying criminals should have guns..... If everyone else in America is allowed to own firearms.
Sorry!
I just don't want them to.

The US nuclear program was started and implemented before there was any thought given to what would happen to the world if these weapons fell into the wrong hands. There have been numerous treaties and agreements to reduce the number of weapons in the stockpiles of the US and Russia. The building and the destruction of these nuclear weapons are open to inspection by both countries and the international inspection agency.

With all due respect, lets face it. The U.S. has been at it since WWII in their development and manufacturing of such weapons. After we hit Japan with the Atomic bomb, and then following the Cold War of the late 50's early 60's, the U.S. backed off from it's use of nukes, as well as Russia. In agreements and working also with scientists, both super-powers realized that to use nukes against each other would be a fruitless waste of time, destroy not only our peoples, but also contaminate the lands as well as the skies.
There were talks between the U.S. and Russia for many, many years before both countries agreed not to let this be their first line of defense because it only meant 'mass' destruction.
Every country on this planet knows the capabilities of the two most powerful countries in the world, and in knowing the track records, understanding what they consist of, and therefore the smaller countries are less apt to bring on a necular war. Even if the smaller countries like Iran would send 1 over, they realize they'd be toast in no time; and since they have not made the pacts with Russia to 'keep it clean' as with the U.S., they will not push the buttons of those that do not support what they are doing.
The leaders of the smaller countries like Iran have just begun uraineum (sp) enrichment...they're beginners at best, in comparison. The way the super-powers see it, they are a threat to the peace they've established even though much of the supply comes from the 'very old devices', they would in no way be compariable to what the U.S. and Russia maintains in their arsenals.
It's just takes so long to explain, but if you research the 'cold war' between Russia and the U.S., and read the entire scope of what had transpired at that time, it will help you understand how this relates to the current issues we face today.
Many of the people who did not go through this time as I had, have absolutely NO CLUE as to what the people of the U.S. were facing. It took everything in Eienhowers power, then J.F. Kennedys powers as leaders of the U.S. to get Russia to 'stand down' it's WMD's. They were truthfully being warmed up in the silos, which contained them. We were way, way to close to being nuked than anyone here can imagine. Our weapons supply of nuke armmament is null, next to that time period.
It was shortly after that, that the Russians had lunched Sputnik, the first orbiting sattallite, and then the scientists began getting together from each of the countries. From that, came the beginning U.S. space programs. It was the 'space race' that really got the two biggest powers in the world, something in common. Even then the relationship between Soviet Russia and the U.S. contained a certain 'strain' and each watched the other, until Communist Russian beliefs began to take a nosedive.
But, the history books can explain it better than I can. However, I do suggest the older versions of the history and comparing it with the way they write it now. It is a very interesting and informative topic and imperative for every American to know as history of this magnitude has no age boundries.

very good question... I don't really have an answer, but my friends and I have talked about the same thing. How can we tell Iran or North Korea they can't do something when we have the same thing. Are they not sovereign states? If some country said to us, "Stop your nuclear weapons program or else," what do you think we'd do? We'd bomb the crap out of them. And people wonder why the rest of the world hates us.

the U.S. is bound by at set of treaties that prevent them from starting a nuclear attack unless attacked, and we invented the thing. as far as blurting out what type of power we have, you don't see our troops marching down Pennsylvania ave. in Washington, D.C. hauling missiles, tanks, rocket launchers and the sort like the do in some countries.

we are a super power. actually a bully in some cases
edit. the strange thing about the treaty(NPT),it gives those that signed it certain rights. some say that the US sharing nuclear weapons violates the NPT.
