I'm interested in a new post but there are people acting for it already. I wanted to talk to the line manager for this post, what should I ask to find out her feelings about me, and whether she has got somebody in mind?

I have problem in putting the tone right, so examples of questions would be appreciated! I don't want to be agressive, I just wanted to show my interest and find out more.

many thanks.

I suggest you focus on discovering what the job requirements are and looking at what skills and experience you have that can be shown as a 'best fit'.

If you start asking about other Candidates they will go all 'official' on you ... if they make any comment at all about other candidates it could all come back to bite them when some-one complains and they have to defend their selection process at an Employment Tribunal.

Be especially careful to discover what the 'key' requirement(s) for the post is/are.

Then stress how your skills 'fit' the new post & especially 'talk up' any requirement where you have a significant advantage over other possible candidates.

If there is a post the company have to be seen to give all suitable candidates the same chance for applying etc... as we all know some jobs are ear-marked for certain people in the company, but would not have thought any manager would give you this info, would stop spending your time on who may get it and get down and do what you have to to ensure YOU get the job
