One story has it that the crew left the ship so quickly because they smelled smoke and were afraid that the ship would explode because of the cargo of alcohol. When they boarded the captains dingy they somehow lost contact/rope with the ship and they drifted to their deaths.

The best theory is that alcohol was leaking from one or more of the many barrels of it this ship carried. Such vapor is explosive. The lifeboat was gone, and there is much evidence that the people on the ship left suddenly, so the captain (was he Benjamin Spooner?) surely thought everyone should leave the ship and get into the lifeboat. Probably a storm separated ship and boat and sank the boat. There are many wild theories, e.g. another captain David Morehouse had a deal with the MC captain to salvage the boat, but that is ridiculous, because the MC captain made more by delivering the cargo. The theory of the crew drinking some of the alcohol and killing the captain is also silly, because the alcohol was not for drinking and would blind or kill anyone who drank it. Alien abduction or sea monsters are too silly to be realistic possibilities.
