Young folks everywhere are practicing yoga to learn how to relax from everyday stress and pressures, gain personal freedom, and enhance their bodies' flexibility. For a quick breakdown, yoga means "discipline" in Sanskrit, a classical language and writing system of India. Although yoga originated in India thousands of years ago, it is popular now as a way to meditate, stretch and flex, and improve health and well-being.
Yoga increases flexibility, and keeps you generally fit through exercises, stretches, and breathing techniques. Jared, 16, a quarterback for his high school in Atlanta, dispelled the myth that yoga was for wimps. He said, "My coach had us go to the YMCA to take a yoga class so we can increase our flexibility. At first, we wanted to keep it secret, but when we went undefeated this year, I guess it did something right! Now I hear all kinds of teams are doing yoga. I think we were the first, though."
Yoga may help boost your immune system. It helps you relax, relieve stress, and maybe even reach "natural bliss." Matt, 13, is a firm believer in the stress-reducing potential of yoga. He says, "My mom was having a really hard time dealing with her recent divorce from my dad. She's a lot calmer and takes life a lot easier after she took up yoga. Her whole lifestyle has changed for the better and she's overall a nicer person. I owe yoga!"
Yoga encourages mental strengthening through patience, concentration, and dedication. Angela, 17, uses yoga for her studies and recently got some good news from the college she's attending in the fall. "I found out the college I am about to attend has yoga class. I am definitely taking it. I believe that yoga really helped me with my SATs, so I know I am going to stick with it in college."
Steph, 17, says, "I practice yoga all the time. I hear about how there are lots of spiritual levels and stuff, but I haven't gotten there yet. I think that if I keep practicing yoga, it will have a huge impact on the way I think and live. Being a guru, though? I dunno."
Actually, for people like Steph, yoga has been modified throughout the years, especially in the U.S. Classes are held all over the world that mostly concentrate on the simple methods of stretching, breathing, and exercise routines.
Eighteen-year-old New Yorker Sakai has been practicing yoga for the past four years. She said, "I used to be the youngest in the class at 14, but now I see lots of teens doing it. I live in New York where things are so hectic, so at least once a week I need yoga in my life. It's real exercise because it helps me get stronger and helps my breathing and flexibility. You use muscles you never knew you had. I don't know what my life would be like without yoga!"
All in all, after hearing about all the benefits yoga can provide, you might want to consider giving it a try. No one is too young to reach "natural bliss"!

Yoga is a set of physical exercizes from India (if memory serves).
They use postures, with breathing exercizes to still the mind and keep the body in shape.
Some people will tell you that yoga is a panacea, and yes yoga can be very beneficial to the mind, body, and spirit. However; Yoga is NO place to take the mind set "No pain; no gain!" I have seen lots of people really hurt thmself in yoga by pushing the body beyond it's limits.
There are other safer exercize regimens than Yoga
Pillates, Qigong, or Tai Chi
