Having been in Timbuktu on the back of a camel, I can tell you that it will take a long time if you get a camel that doesn't like you. I'm not kidding either. My camel kept turning around trying to bite me and my guide kept giving me instructions in Arabic, which I couldn't quite understand. The Sahara Desert is an incredible sight on the back of a camel, but you have to watch for desert pirates who stop you, take your money, then your camel and leave you there until someone else comes to your rescue. All in all, a few days on a camel or a couple hours by a plane which has just about the same reliability. Happy travels - its worth the trip!

not days, months! you will be crossing through niger or algeria before getting to Mali... it will take you a good three to four months to go... why do you want to do that? check for safety as well..
