You could also make the number an improper fraction...with a denominator of 8.
3 = 3*8/8
3 = 24/8
So 24/8 - 3/8 = 21/8
21/8 is like having 8/8 + 8/8 + 5/8, and since 8/8 is equal to 1....
1 + 1 +5/8
= 2 and 5/8

then u make it with common denominators
3/1 which u multply by 8 so u get 24/8
24/8-3/8 then subtract numerators
which equals
21/8
