I am writing an essay can someone give me a well-though out definition of what grief means to them?

I need an opening paragraph that begins with the definition of grief but I dont want to use the dictionary's definition. I need some ideas on how to elaberate on it more.

grief, also known as suffering, is a part of human life that seems to envelop us inside itself. grief succumbs even the most jovial people if shot at the right angle. it brings distress, worry, and misery to the hearts and minds of millions of families, friends, and even innocent bystanders on any given day. the simplest event that you might find irrelevant, can be catastrophic to several others. grief can be caused by so many different things such as death, pain, and abuse (physically or mentally). those who grieve over someone or something appear to be depressed and forlorn.

Grief is a time, short or long, after an upsetting event when one can mourn, reflect, or just meditate on the events that took place.
