American Samoa has not been subject to the Federal Minimum wage in over 50 years. The reason for this is because 80% of the economy is based on one thing: canning tuna. With a lack of diversity in the economic sector, raising the minimum wage in the canneries, would make the entire territory a welfare state. Other Congresses have realized this and that is why a special committee is in place that deals with the Samoan wage every 2 years. This wasn't a new development, it was just something Republicans felt they could jump on.

OK
Sounds good for selling Newspapers But a quick search of the USDOL website will show that years before Bush took office Soma lobbied congress to exempt themselves from the 29 CFR 5.11 etal
So even Rush Limpbaugh could not get the pay increase for Soma Nor would they want it.
BTW they get paid a living wage.

I've not seen anyone that isn't a rabid Republican that even remotely cares...
I think it's a little shady... but if this is the worst thing this congress does... we're doing great...
I mean... before the story broke... 95 percent of people didn't even know Somoa (or where ever it was) was an American territory... and most people still don't know...
anyone who would ever possibly vote democrat... doesn't seem to care... so it has no impact...

All the politicians toss on pork. Why blame one side when both are pilfering the cookie jar, the box, mom's purse, dad's wallet, and crazy uncle joe's sock-o-cash?

Of course not, silly. The press will sweep it away like they did with William Jefferson's $90,000.
