They had to get the Indians (Native Americans) off the land to make room for all the new Merkins (invaders). It was part of a larger belief system called "manifest destiny", which dictated that it was white man's destiny to spread out across all of North America.

As a Native American, and a teacher, I can tell you that the Indian Removal Act was not good or necessary for my people. The whole reason behind the Indian Removal Act was to benefit the federal government with more land. Native Americans throughout the United States, especially in North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Oklahoma still suffer the consequences of this Act. Have you ever been on an Indian Reservation??
