Neighbors give me a puppy then tell girl I stole it?

Question

My neighbor gave me her dog then told her kids I took it.?
The neighbor got tired of her dog and gave it to me. The next day the little girl said " Mom the lady next door has our dog."
Mom said " Well she must have stolen it. Shes a nice lady, She must love our dog. Why don't we let her keep it."
I don't want to make the Mom look bad to her daughter , But I also don't want the girl to think I stole her dog.
I am thinking of giving the dog back even though the parents don't want it.
What do I say to the girl if she asks?

Tell her the truth. Her Mother should not have lied and you don't need to lie to her. Let her work it out with her Mom.

It sounds to me as if mother dog has taken them on a little stroll and some passer by has spotted them and nabbed the pups, sad but true, especially a breed like this, they are worth alot of money, even without any papers. The only thing he can do is phone the police ASAP, put posters up EVERYWHERE and get in touch with Dog Lost, he could also place adverts on Epupz, Pets4homes and Preloved, they are websites that sell dogs, he should put a BIG stolen advert on them. Just tell the little girl that you are just taking care of the dog until she is old enough to take care of it her self. So that way she still does not know her parents gave the dog to you and she knows you didn't steal it.

Oh my gosh! That's a pretty funny story. Not that it isn't wrong of the mom but its still pretty funny. I would let the mom know (in private) you are not comfortable with her kids thinking you are a dog napper and if she doesn't tell the truth you just don't feel comfortable keeping the dog.
