Before the Punic Wars, Sicily's ownership was highly contested. The Carthaginians wanted control of the small island because it was strategically placed right off Italy's coast. There was also a strong Roman resistance to the north of Sicily that the Carthaginians wanted out of the way of their primary invasion route. I think Messina was the source of the resistance.

The Carthaginians wanted to develop the number 1 naval power and be able to compete with Rome. They were related to the Phoenicians who were known for their naval exploits and the way they could become this was to defeat Rome and control some of the areas around Rome.
