i have darker skin too so i would suggest that you steer well clear of pastel shades. Try to avoid mint greens, light grays, blues and pinks. These will only make your skin appear dull and will give you a greyish tinge.
You should try rich, bright colours. Dark green with shimmer looks amazing on darker skin although you need apply it properly to carry it off. An easy to wear shade is an intense purple, again with shimmer. Navy also looks amazing on dark skin, these sorts of colours would probably look better on at night and for the club.
I find that mac do amazing colours, they're really rich and vibrant and you are guaranteed to find something you like. I also think nars is great.
Im darker skinned and i prefer wearing earthy tones. I like browns, coppers, golds and bronze. I think shimmery eyeshadows look better on darker skin as opposed to matte ones because it brings out the gold tones in your skin. If you invest in a good brand then, the shimmery particles should be fine and not at all tacky or glittery. Light reflective, is what you should be looking for.
One of the best eyeshadows i have bought recently is by Christian Dior and its a quad. Its called beige masaii,(£32) the colours are sheer, earthy, natural looking but effective. I also like the bronze one from mac(£10). I also have one from yves saint laurent, i think its no.9 (£19), its a brown colour with shimmer and it gives a good smokey eye.
Darker skins can get away with wearing rich vibrant colours and also earthy, natural tones. Just remeber one thing always, always steer clear of silver. Its unflattering on darker skins, just makes you look washed out. If you insist on using it, just use it on your tear ducts in the inner corners of your eyes.

I'm fair skinned myself, but I don't care for whites and light colors on darker skins...I'd stick with something darker like dark browns and greens

If you have brown eyes. When you choose the colour of your eyeshadow, look at the color wheel; if your eyes are brown, the opposite of brown on the colour wheel is blue. Some people think that you should choose the eyeshadow closest to your eye colour, they have it all backwards. If your eyes are brown and you choose brown eyeshadow, the pigment in the eyeshadow is actually competing with the colour of your eyes. When you wear blue (or even plum) eyeshadow, it is the opposite of of brown, therfor, not competing with your eye colour at all and actually making your eyes pop.
