More to the point why do people feel the need to produce/spread them? Honestly, if you do, why? Or maybe Norton anti-virus (other anti-virus programs are available) produce them in order to support their interests.

My computer expert friend does not care for Norton...why? If something goes wrong with it, and it will, according to my source, the whole system goes down...and you will, of course, need to get it fixed. See how it goes? More money...Now back to your question. All you can do is try to protect your computer. Every time you get on the Internet you system is vulnerable...no way around it. If someone says they provide total protection they are probably lying. I answered a question similar to this and gave a lot of free virus and spy-ware info. Please check it out.

You can pick up a virus from any link. I knew a guy that could knock anyone off the web that he wanted but I never understood why anyone could be that mean and laugh about it. But I did borrow his talent when someone tried to send me a virus. I have no clue how but he shut their whole system down.

When you download pictures and other items from the Internet then you have a chance to get viruses, you should use the anti-virus software for your protection of your computer or laptop.
Sometimes viruses are passed but intentionally.

Why he asked?

It's all about making money. Perhaps Eugene Kaspersky, founder of anti-virus maker Kaspersky Labs said it best, " It's a different world today. 10 years ago, we were fighting against smart kids who hacked as a hobby. Now, we're dealing with criminal gangs that control your computer to make money. Different world, different protections."
