After I get married, how long do I have to change my documents (driver's license, work/school papers, bank accounts, social security card...etc.) from my maiden name to my married name? Do I have to change them at all? Would this create an issue later if I don't do it ASAP?

I know that you have to know what you want your married name to be when you fill out the marriage license application (or at least it's that way in my area), and I know that I want to take on his name. But if I say that on the marriage license application, does it mean I have to change all my other documents ASAP, or can I wait a year or so after things have settled down a bit and I feel more married to do the name change? Because honestly, putting his last name after my name sounds just so silly right now.

It was change as soon as you sing the certificate of marriage at the justice of peace. You can now use his last name at anytime providing the marriage certificate at first. You can go to the social security office anytime. As well as everything else.

You normally want to do the name change within the fist 30 days after your wedding. It will stop the insanity, and make things simpler in your life.
Take your birth certificate and your marriage license to the local social security office. Then call your bank and ask which papers they need (probably the same ones, as I recall). THe university you attend will want to change your name on your paperwork as well.

You don't have to change your name to his if you don't want to. Once you DO change your name however you HAVE to change it on EVERYTHING you sign your name to, credit cards, bank accounts, driver's license, social security, employment records, W/4s And YES you have to change them ALL and you have to do it as soon as you can after you get married...if you wait a year you can be arrested and charged with fraud, because it is against the law to sign a name that is not your's to ANY documents that is called forgery.

You only have to change them if you plan on signing on any documents with your married name. I have been married for 7 months now and have not changed mine yet but I do not sign my married name on documents that i have to show id for. I dont think there is a specific time for this. You would want to change it though if maybe you plan on signing yuour married name on bank account or for a car or things like that. You cant sign your married name and not be able to produce an id or proof that that is your name. Stay blessed!

Colleen O, you DO NOT have to change your name as soon as anything. It's a choice; however, if you CHOOSE to change your name and whatever time you decide to do it you must make the LEGAL change PRIOR to signing the new name on any legal documents. No one is going to jail for familiarly using their married name before it becomes their legal name. The issue becomes what is your proof that you are who you say you are if you have no identification to show.

You don't *have* to change your name - you can choose to change it or keep your old name, it's completely up to you. I don't know what the time limit might be on that, you might want to check with your local authorities on the timeline and the procedure. If you're keeping your original name, there's nothing you need to do - but if you decide to change it, you have to take legal steps to do so, it doesn't get changed "automatically" just because you're married.

You don't have to change them at all if you don't want to take on his name. It also does't matter how long it takes you either. But when you change one thing you need to change them all at the same time. So if you change your name on your licence and not your bank account, you see the problem? They have kits you can buy that have everything you need to change so you wont forget anything!
