My wife received a letter in the mail today from someone she went to grade school with. She was not good friends with him or anything, but he is currently in jail for murdering his girlfriend's child! He got our address from an acquaintance of my wife, someone also from school, but she doesnt talk to this person really anymore. Anyway, this guy said he might be getting out in the summer if his appeal goes well, and wants my wife to write him back to let him know we got the letter ok. His mom just died, so he has no family. I am VERY upset that he got our address from this other person, we never authorized it, and now I have to worry about the safety of my wife and our son? I live in an apartment, so its not really that difficult to move if we have to, but what should I do? Should she just ignore his letter and let him think it was a wrong address? Should she write him and tell him that were moving all around and not sure where we're going to be? I dont know what to do! HELP!!!

I don't want him to know where we live, what if he gets out of jail, and has no where to go so he comes to our place, and then we have to turn him away, it could be a bad situation!

Please ask authorities.
The average Joe or Jane does not know how to stop a stalker, either. That's why the cops tell the victim exactly what to do to make sure a stalker knows thevictim's intention to never have contact again- to be 100% clear in a conversation, and to absolutely 100% ignore that person. Even one bit of attention can look like acceptance to a stalker.
Same thing here.
Only the authorities know the laws, what you can do, can't do, and what to look out for!Good luck!

Get a gun and learn how to use it safely and proficiently. (They really aren't evil.) Keep it with you wherever you go. Do NOT be afraid to use it if you have to. Teach you wife how to use it to. The cops can't protect you from ANYTHING. They can only respond AFTER a victim or corpse has been created. Refuse to be a victim! Stand up for yourself and family. The cops won't!

DO NOT ANSWER THAT LETTER!

He could be lying about his mom being dead, and everything else.
He just wants a place to stay when he gets out.

If he writes again, send both letters to his warden, and tell the warden that you do not want any communication with this person.

Move. Tell the person who gave the man ur adress to stay away from him. Dont write him back. Stay alert and have someone watch ur kid at all times.

Then ignore the letter. If he attempts further contact, you can file a police report.

I'd tell to not write back and toss his letter in the trash.

I would talk to an attorney. He/she can guide you in obtaining a TRO (restraining order) and then you may wish to move and not notify anyone. You may be able to request special notice of his release since you may be an "interested" party.
