The guidelines are date and quality. There are millions of silver dollars around with the majority only worth their silver value. Look at some of the coin shop web sites for information on how to grade a coin and then look up its value there. Don't forget what you see at a website is the selling value. If they buy a coin from you it is less.

Go to heritagecoin.com, setup a user name, and then search old auction archives. However, you need to know the grade. All heritage coins are sold graded by NGS or PCGS, and sometimes ICG. Without a grade and sealed holder signifying such a grade, from an agency such as these, it's hard to value. There are books on grading which you can use to estimate grade and check value before deciding to send in for grading. Grading can cost $10 to $30 per coin.

Their value is face if there is nothing special about them like double died, mistakes, etc. Just because something is old doesnt make it automatically more valuable. If you want the real scoop of those coins, go to a dealer. But unless you have very detailed pics of each coin, you arent gonna get any good info on the net.

Get a Red Book (Coin dealers buying guide). It lists all the prices, and how to grade the coins.

To get over the value of silver for them, you look at date, mint mark, and condition. DO NOT POLISH THEM!!! It destroys the value.

The true value would be the face value of the bills.
The perceived value is what someone will pay your for them.
