Back in the day most people went by Christian morals. And sense the Bible isn't cool with gay people, most people, including cowboys, didn't like them. But back then most people who where gay keep it to themselves. Most likely to keep from being shot.

Who actually said they did?
Cowboys were often out on isolated ranches and/or long trips getting herds to markets. They were out of reach of females for days or weeks.
The cowboys were one of the largest gay sub-cultures, along with sailors and (believe it or not) lumber-jacks/miners!
