There are double hoods (made to use two fluorescent bulbs).
That Fish Place (see link below) carries these, compact fluorescents (I have 130 watts over a 29 gallon this way), and metal halide (so intense you can get a sunburn under one) fixtures:

If you have to buy a hood and fluorescent bulbs separately, make sure they both have the same T- number. This changes with the diameter and output of the bulbs used, and using incompatable tubes can burn out in less than a day (or burn out your ballast in the hood).

Why do you feel the need to increase your lighting? If you are looking to keep plants or a marine tank with anemones or corals, thats one thing, but if you just want more light, realize that in a freshwater tank more light usually means more algae!

You should get a t5 lighting system. You can find one online for around a hundred bucks for your 20 gallon. The light that came with the tank is useless for coral. For a healthy reef you will need supplements that you can get from a pet store. (calcium, iodine, things like that)

try asking for someone who's wanting to give theirs away. go to www.craigslist.com and go to the one in your area. you may need a new hood, but that shouldn't be a problem.

if you dn't want to do that,,, ,then go to petsmart and look for a hood with the correct dimensions and is a 40 watt. try petsmart, petco, and even private aquarium stores. sometimes, the better equipment is at the smaller places.

good luck!!
