Theres really no secret to gaining flexibility. The best thing to do is just hold multiple stretches for 30seconds to a minute to the point where they are uncomfortable. If you do this daily, you will achieve muscle memory, and your muscles will feel more and more normal each time you go into that position. Before you dance, I've found that you need to keep your muscles warm before class in order not to strain anything. It also helps if you move your feet around briskly or do little jumps before you get into dancing of any kind. It realy pays off. Once you gain your flexibility it will be much easier to become a better dancer!

hey When i started dance i was not flexible at all!!! And every morning when i got up i would stretch and it doesnt work but for like a week i kept waking up at around 2 in the morning so i would get up and stretch hoping i could fall asleep again after so i did that for about a week and i noticed i was starting to get more flexible so i kept getting up at 2 in the morning and by the end of a month i could do splits. I still do it today and i have been getting up at 2 since i was 7 and i am really flexible now. It works because in order to be flexible you have to stretch while you grow and most people grow early in the morning.
good luck

Well I have been dancing for 10 years and i have been in pointe for at least 3 and the best way that i found for me to get in pointe was picking up marbles with my toes and doing releves on a phone book. As for the flexibility part, im not sure because i am double jointed so i am very flexible, but doing some backbends and releves to get into pointe. For dancing, just keep on practicin!!
PS: It doesnt matter how much you think you suck at dancing, just keep on tryin!!

i suffer too. I'm decent at pointe (came naturally) but i have no flexibility. i can barely reach my toes while keeping my knees straight. although everyone can achieve flexibility, it takes a lot of work. here's how: warm up, STRETCH, and then work on your flexibility. if you keep working on it, you will become better and better. good luck. and to strengthen your ankles for pointe, stand near something you can hold onto, and do a bunch of tendues, grande plies, and then a ton of releves.

I use to be the same here are some great ways of fixing your problem.
Activities..
Gymnastics:
*Gets you flexible by making you practice and practice also it's really enjoyable.
*If your trying to go pro on dancing the difficult dancing moves usually have gymnastic in it so there you go another plus.
*It takes you by level so don't worry about pushing you to much.
Yoga:
*Gives you physical strength.
*Makes you very flexible and relaxes you!!
*Gives you mental strength
Some activities I do:
Before you watch TV stretch and then do a split position(like when u go as far as you can go on a split then sit down) and watch tv like that.
Hope that helps and good luck on anything you do!!

Keep in mind when stretching that in order to increase flexibility, that the stretch must be held for at least 30 seconds.

WITH BALLET YOU HAVE TO STRETCH AND DO PRACTICES AND WARM-UPS DAILY (TO BE GOOD AT IT AND REALLY STRENGTHEN FEET, ANKLES AND CALVE MUSCLES)
ONE GOOD WARM UP EXERCISE (WILL STRENGTHEN ANKLE MUSCLES)
1. IS TO GET INTO FIRST POSITION (HEELS TOGETHER; FEET MAKE 90 DEGREE ANGLE)
2. YOU GO UP ON THE BALL OF YOUR FEET
3. BEND KNEES
4. PUT HEELS BACK ON THE FLOOR
5. STRAIGHTEN LEGS BACK INTO FIRST POSITION
SHOULD BE DONE IN SETS OF 20
AN OTHER GOOD ONE IS TO JUMP STRAIGHT UP INTO THE AIR, POINTING TOES THEN LANDING
BALLET USES A LOT MORE THAN JUST ANKLE MUSCLES...TO HOLD ARMS UP AS LONG AS BALLERINAS DO YOU NEED TO STRENGTHEN ARMS...BALLERINAS ALSO NEED TIGHT AB MUSCLES IN ORDER TO HOLD SOME OF THE POSITIONS THAT THEY HAVE TO
GOOD LUCK

Try doing something like the splits in front of the TV or while doing something that doesn't involve moving around, it should help!
