The USA lost 58,000 young people in Vietnam, lost the war, pulled out and the country is still a communist country. The USA now considers Vietnam a friendly country.

Cuba is also a communist country but no Americans were killed there. If anything, the US sponsored the Bay of Pigs invasion but Cuba has not invaded the USA, flown jets into the towers or anything else except they are not ruled by the USA like so many other countries.

Why is the embargo still on after 25 years? What does it hope to accomplish?

Vietnam has a market economy, Cuba does not.

It could also be that Americans of Cuban descent are a much more vocal lobby than that of Vietnamese in the US.

In the first place Dave, the Us didn't lose the War in Viet Nam. The liberal whiners turned the Country against us after the Tet Offensive. Just for the record, we won that one also. Yes, we lost 58,000 Service People in Viet Nam. The Vietnamese lost that same number DURING TET so let's try to keep our facts straight.

The embargo is still on with CFuba because that's the way Kennedy set it up. In order to prevent a War with the Soviets, he had to pledge that the US would make no moves on Cuba. Unlike most of the rest of the world, we kept our word.

The embargo will end when Castro goes toes up.

We don't rule Viet Nam, alright? As a matter of fact, the US only rules the US. In case you haven't been paying attention, while picking your nose and chasing skirts, or whatever it is that you do, the Vietnamese approached us. We did our research, and when we saw thatthey were normalizing with the world climates, and not acting as agressors (Cuba sent soldiers to Angola and also to Grenada [I remember this one. We kicked their asses all over the island, in the 80's!], by the way). Viet Nam does not engage in dialogue that is damaging to other powers, as Cuba, and their new friends, do. The Vietnamese want to be a happy and productive people. They know that the French would not help them after ousting them from French Indo-China. And, they know that a true Capitalist is about income and growth, so they turned to their former adversary. There is no shame in asking a former enemy for help. There is shame in being too proud to try something bold and good for the people.

We hammered North Vietnam so bad in that war. Linebacker One and Two devastated the country and brought the North Vietnamese to Paris.
I think that there is some sympathy for Viet Nam. You here people here still talk bad about the japanese (funny, they give people good jobs) because of Dec 7th 1941, but they are silent on the vietnamese.

A good question...the first one, anyway.

I, for one, will not purchase anything that has the "MADE IN VIETNAM" label on it, no matter how much I want or need it. I disagree 100% with Vietnam NOT being the subject of a trade embargo.

Because the USA believes it has the right to dictate the economic policies of any country it likes.
