This is the question: A whale swims east for a distance of 6.9km, turns around and goes west for 1.8 km, and finally turns around and heads 3.7km east. What is the total distance traveled by the whale, and what are the magnitude and direction of the displacement of the whale?
*I figured the distance as 12.4km, so is the magnitude and direction 8.8km going east?

8.8km is the magnitude

The direction is North, South, East West Up Down Toward McDonalds, bearing 246, i-hat, j-hat, South by Southeast, something like that that tells you which way the displacement went.

8.8 km is the magnitude only. We have to mention the direction of movement for expressing the displacement.
