A gift certificate to Babies R Us would be great. They may have everything they need now but that will change in a few short months. Babies grow and their needs change. A savings bond is a great gift, too.

If the gift is for a best friend, i think it's nice to give something sentimental that will be kept for years as opposed to something that would be played with or practical. A plant is nice, except that if it dies...that would be a bummer for both you and your friend.
I like the following ideas:
A baby's plate/cup/bowl set in either china or ceramic. These usually don't ever get used, just displayed or saved in a keepsake box. Fortunoff makes nice affordable ones with Peter Rabbit on them that are very sweet.
A piggy bank. You could either get silver or stainless steel for a fancy look or go to a store that personalizes items and have the child's name painted on it.
Anything that is personalized always seems so thoughtful. A baby's hooded robe that is embroidered with it's name could be used for a short while and then saved.
A more expensive item would be the traditional silver rattle that could be engraved or the birth certificate holder that can also be found in stainless steel and more affordable.
If you're still stuck for ideas, go to a small boutique gift shop instead of Babies R Us. Most of them have a section for babies and you might come up with another unique idea there.
Good Luck!

I think a plant would be okay along with another small gift for the baby. Maybe a book you enjoyed as a child ("The Runaway Bunny", "Where the Wild Things Are", Eric Carle books, etc.). You could write a little note in the front of the book about how you know his/her daddy and how loved he/she is. The plant may die, but this book would be treasured by the parents and the child when he/she gets older. Good Luck!

At first, I thought your idea was kinda lame. But then, I thought how nice! It's like planting a tree or naming a star after them. Just think how cool it will be when the baby is grown up to be able to see how huge the plant has become and know it was planted for them?
I've got your back on this one, but, I would also suggest a toy or something as well.

That's a very unique idea... I like it.
I was given two Azalea plants that I potted and are alive and well on my balcony... when I get a yard, I'll plant them there, and they will always remind me of my beautiful daughter.
Everyone buys clothes and toys... you don't need to worry about that... just make sure your best friend understands the symbolic nature of the Jade plant.

If its a plant that has to be inside I wouldnt recommend that for small children... a good thing to give is a CD (certificate of deposit, not music) or a savings bond, or something like that. It doesnt have to be a large ammount, but it shows that you are looking into the childs future.

do some research on that plant, I want to say I read or saw somewhere that they can be dangerous if a child eats the leaves. I could be wrong, but I am sure a quick google search can clear that up.
sounds lame, but every mother needs more diapers..... or a special book.

A jade plant is very nice. However...ALSO give her something she needs. A car-seat, Diapers, sheets, bottles, breast pads, spit rags, bottles, booties, sleepers the list goes on!
That stuff adds up. having to buy all that stuff without help can be financially devastating.
