I'm spending a couple of nights in San Francisco first week in March. I'm looking for a clean, safe hotel within walking distance of Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf, etc. Something around the $100-$120 range is about what I'm looking at price wise. Doesn't have to be fancy, but clean and safe are a must.

You will probably want to stay in or near the Financial District, which is between the two. My recommendation is the Hilton Financial District. My wife and I recently got a room there for about $110, which is about $100 less expensive than the surrounding hotels. They are newly renovated (2005). The rooms are nothing special, but are very clean. They have a nice lobby with a good lounge with live entertainment, and an excellent staff.

You can walk to Union Square from there (about 4 blocks). It is also about a block from Chinatown, and right around the corner from the south end of Little Italy/North Beach. Highly recommend.

There are several safe Hotels that are near the wharf. Go check on HOTWIRE.COM and put into the cite where you want to go. They have a Radisson, Sheraton, Hyatt hotels but are going to cost about 140 a night. There is a Wharf inn and best western Tuscan inn that are a little lower. But if you are looking for a safe but not fancy hotel the Comfort inn by the bay or Buena Vista Motor inn is about 80.00 per night, It is a little more walking about a mile from the wharf. I used to live down in that area and for people who are visiting I whould always recommend the name brand hotels because of safety and cleanliness. Check out Hotwire, Hotel.com, and travelocity for the better pricing sometimes you can get some good deals out there.

I always stay at Club Quarters. It is reasonable (prices will depend on supply/demand) and well located (very close to the Ferry Terminal Building, Embarcadero, Chinatown & North Beach). You have to be a member to stay there so don't contact the hotel directly, instead use and online site such as Orbitz. One of the other contributors is right that Union Sq and Fisherman's Wharf are not in the same proximity. Beware of hotels that advertise themselves as in the Union Square district, they are often in seedy areas. Have a great time!

Union Square's not really in walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf (you can do it but it's a looooong walk). Union square might be a better location since it's closer to BART, other transit, and the cable car to the wharf.

Just thought I'd let you know that, I live here so never had to stay in any of the hotels...

San Francisco Marriott is a great hotel. It is very close to union square and the trolley which can take you to the wharf. I don't know about in your price range but it'll be close. If you don't stay there go to the bar at the top. It is amazing and has breathtaking day and night views.Good luck!
