Does anyone know at what time in history the legend of Joseph's visit to England appeared. I'm concerned not with when the visit is alleged to have happened, but when the legend first appeared in literature or folk tradition.

Joseph of Arimathea is mentioned in the Arthurian legends concerning the Grail Quests. According to these stories Joseph left the Grail and the Round Table in Britain for safe keeping. Because the early Celts had no written language it is nearly impossible to acurately date when these stories first appeared.

I think it's related to Grail lore. After the Crucifixion, Joseph of A., Mary Magdelene, Mother Mary, and 'daughter' Sarah travelled in a 'boat with no oars', probably a sailboat, to the coast of France. From there, they walked across to Brittany, and across to England. I believe at least one of them is supposed to be buried near Canterbury. There is also some of this related to the journeys of the Shroud of Turin.
