Here's the problem. The car is a 99 GMC Sonoma, automatic.
On the way to work today I noticed as I was getting on the highway, that when I tried to speed up the RPMs would go way up, but I wasn't moving any faster. I took my foot off the gas and slowly stepped down and I accelerated, but anytime I had to stop the same thing would happen. When I was moving on the highway, there was no problem. I could speed up and slow down and it was fine. It's only when I am moving slow and trying to speed up that this happens. Then on the way home the Idiot Light comes on. I, being an idiot when it comes to cars, have no idea what all this means. Is it the transmission? Is it just that I need transmission fluid? I just inherited this car and I have no idea when the last time trans fluid was added. All the other fluid levels are fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

I would have the trans fluid and filter changed seeing you don't know anything about the service record just for the sake of knowing it has been done.

I would check the transmission fluid. The car must be running and be in park to check the fluid properly. Remove the dipstick for the trans, wipe it off, then put it back in and take it out a second time. Now take a look at the level. If it needs fluid, take it to your local oil change shop and they should be able to help you.

First step, check the tranny fluid. The engine and tranny should be at operating temperature and running on level ground. Shift thru all the gears and then check the dipstick for the tranny (red stuff). If its low you need to add the correct tranny fluid doen that dipstick tube (only a pint at atime and recheck). If it needs fluid then you probably have a leak check the ground and also look in the rad for grey/red sludge. If the fluid level is fine then its time for a visit to the tranny shop. Hope that helps.

It's probably low on fluid. You need to check the dipstick with the transmission hot and engine running. Add enough to bring it up and take it in for a transmission service.
