cultural identity can come in different forms. It could be language, accent, dance, clothes, almost anything. It is usually something concerning your and your families past. What country you are from, how you speak old customs.
Sometimes it is good to tone the display of this cultural identity. As an example if your family are native Eskimo's you would stand out if you wore Eskimo clothing to school. Toning down the display of cultures does not mean the loss of the identity. It is just that there is a proper time and place for such display.
It is up to each individual to determine if they want to be identified with his past culture. That is one of the things that make this country great.
There are countries such as in the middle east that force you to dress in their mannor if you are going out in public. There are cultures in Africa that sexually mutilate young girls as one of their customs. Not all cultural identity is worth hanging on to.

Cultural identity is not static but dynamic. When one refuses to understand that culture evolves from a to b, fundamentalism and conservatism set it creating a lot of problems. Some customs are lost- other metamorphose into other customs. That is the nature of life!

Cultural identity is the word old fogies use for "things ain't the way I mistakenly remember them to have been in the good ole days."
It's a falsehood, and we can't lose what does not exist.
