The fish is sick - usually when they float upside down, it means that they're dying.
The time for the big ker-plunge to heaven is nearing...Sorry : (

It sounds like swim bladder disorder. I found a website from the UK that goes into this in more detail. Look under the part that says "My fish are upside down / can't swim." This gives some other suggestions besides giving him a pea, which is a good thing to try, btw, as constipation can cause equilibrium problems, too. Read the other sections on this page for more info about that. ( I have additional information, but it's from betta fish sites. I don't know what kind of fish you have, and this is generic to all fish.)
Don't forget to keep his water in good condition (clean, correct temperature, etc.). He may need to be in a sick tank if you suspect an infection causing the swim bladder problem or if the other fish are harassing him in his state.

sounds like it is Swim Bladder Disease, there is no forever cure, but they can still live with the disease. i know of someone that had their goldfish operated on and they installed a buoy device that use Styrofoam and a float, not sure how it worked but the Styrofoam acted as a balance so the fish could swim upright again. a lot of gold fish get this due to the type of food (flakes) they suck in air while trying to get the flakes off the surface.

Sometimes fish kept in captive environments loose the ability to control their swim bladder. By inflating and deflating the bladder they can control buoyancy and go up or down in the water column. If your fish is eating and looks otherwise healthy this is most Likely the problem. I have seen fish survive for years with this condition...

One of the other fish has pro bally bumped him very hard in the side. His float is pro bally broken. I had one aggressive fish that kept bumping all the other fish, but my floating fish died in about a week. Watch the fish to see if that is whats happening. Take the agressive one out if that's the case,so he won't kill the other ones.

sounds like swimbladder disease. don't feed him for three days, then feed him only cooked husked peas for three days. should get better.
good luck!
Edit: Trust me, if he's been floating upside down for long enough for you to try not feeding him for a few days, then he's not dying - as of yet....
the pea thing works very well, and don't just flush him or get rid of him, because this will probably work.
chances are tho, that if he's beeen that way for too long, that there could be irreversable damage, and he could float that way for the rest of his life.
good luck, honey..
Edit: another possiblity is that if he only does it after he eats, then he's getting air into his stomach. try soaking your food before you pour it into the tank so that he dosn't have to get too much air too.

Now to business enterprise. it fairly is intense-high quality to take heed to you care sufficient on your fish to try this, yet whilst its eating i would not cull it. It desires to stay. If its been alive considering that december i would not kill it. optimistically im to not late As I published to anouther persons question. I had a extensive goldfish with a swimbadder subject. Its not incurable!!! it ought to not artwork yet its properly worth a shot. Take 2 aquarium nets and prop the fish up currectly interior the water and create some variety of rig to hold it there for an hour. This properly fastened my fish that alter into swimming upsidedown. additionally aggitation of the waters serface and a water cleansing ought to not harm the two. If none of that works attempt a hospital tank and a few drugs for swimbladder infections. (Althogh i ought to allow you be attentive to IMO they dont artwork ok) If all else fails you dont ought to decrease your fishes head thoroughly off. you may purely sever the spinal colum under it fairly is head. Use a pair of pinking shears. Or have a pal do it mutually as you dig an entire interior the returned backyard. in any different case a frozen water ice dip will at once kill it. purely determine there is sufficient water so its can bypass into the bucket. And make it very very chilly. Dont % it to experience something. Sorry if I sound chilly. i be attentive to what your going threw I had the right element take place to an entire selection of aquariums I had durring an somewhat undesirable potential outage. potential exchange into out for 4 day's in 2000 durring a poor Ice typhoon. We have been freezing so the fish have been fairly undesirable off. None died till the potential got here returned one thou. Thats the humorous element. Im going to vent some greater. Ive in no way advised this tale online to every person, lol. Deathtoll: One aquarium of Barbed Tetras, One aquarium of Silver Blacktailed sharks, One Saltwater Clown & annenime, One 70gallon aquarium of Oscars, One aquarium of Guppies, One aquarium with my Jack Demsy, One aquarium of Neon tetra's, One aquarium of female betta's, One aquarium of countless Fancy Goldfish ( And one aquarium with unusual's and ends fish. Oh, my fish did this too. Fish have the ability to let out the air and float to the bottom. Or to the top. He lacks that gland. I am sorry if the food goes to the bottom he can't reach it. He will die soon. I hope he had a good life.
