It depends on what interests you. Whether you're interested in people, culture, or landscapes makes a big difference. Also, are you into activities, sight-seeing, or lying on the beach? I would like to eventually travel just about everywhere, except the poles. For landscapes, I'm interested in the Yangze river and New Zealand. For activities, southern California or Australia. For beautiful scenery, and an interesting cultural mix, Mauritius would be fantastic. Do you like cities or countryside?

we traveled from a small town in West Virginia to New Mexico where we stayed for a week. We went through several states and just the way the scenery changed was tremendous. we went from the hills in WV to just flat country in NM. We went through huge cities and small cities. I thought the whole road trip thing was great. I loved Texas, especially with the storms coming across the land, you can see it coming for miles.
From our hotel room you could see the hot air balloon races. you could see the airport and then look out over the city for miles and miles. At night time the lights of the city lit up everything, but then you could look out and see the darkness everywhere around it.
We explored some of down town Albequerque, and its place in history was great. There is an old church in the middle of town that has rose bushes growing in its courtyard. it was very pretty.
i would say a road trip, but if you couldn't afford (or want) that--try NM.
