The genus name for all memebers of the dog family is 'canis'. A wolf, for example, is Canis lupus. Many domesticated animals have a species name of 'familiaris' or 'domesticus'. I would start there.

Just for the sake of accuracy, the term "dog" actually only applies to the male. The proper term for the female is *****.
