replaced the lower element on a 2 element system. The reset keeps tripping. what could be causing this.

One of two things, The top element is bad( most times it will go bad first. It is the first to fire) Or the thermostat it's self is bad. Either way they are both easy fixes.

1) Make sure the connectors are not touching the sheet metal.
2) Disconnect the terminals and measure resistance between the element and body of the hot water heater. Should be open.
3) Maybe you have a weak breaker.
4) Maybe you installed the wrong element

If button snaps back out it could be that the temperature of the water is higher than the cut off setting of the limit switch. Allow water temperature to drop. The limit can be reset at 120°F or below.

if you have a two thermostats (upper and lower) on the heater make sure they are both set at same temp. a 2-5 degree diff can make it pop
