All defenders will tell you that stopping goals is the most important thing in football.

You get talking to a striker and they'll be quick to remind you they're the ones with the most important job!

A team obviously needs both. But the simple truth is that you can't win a game without bursting the back of the net with the ball.

Want to be a football pro?
Some basics first though.

All players must be in their own half at the kick-off and the first touch of the ball must go forward.

The game is restarted after a goal in exactly the same way from the centre-spot, and also at the start of the second half.

Did you know it is possible to score directly from the kick-off?

So why not start the game with a bang and see if the keeper's on their toes with a cheeky shot at goal.

Just imagine, that means there could be 5,400 goals in a game. Nonsense I know but the magic number is 90 - at senior level anyway.

There are 90 magical minutes to score all those goals, which are split between two halves of 45 minutes.

Then there's a break of up to 15 minutes at half-time for a breather and a chance for the manager to throw the tea cups about.

Stop the clock. A fine night for England

Additional time is allowed at the end of each half by the referee to make up for time lost through substitutions and treatment of injured players.

In cup competitions extra-time is often played if the score is still level.

Depending on the competition this can be two full 15-minute periods or the silver-goal rule that will be at this year's European Champs.

Here, if one of the teams are ahead after the first period of extra-time, the match ends. If the score is still level, the second 15-minute period is played.

Still no goals after 30 minutes? Then it's down to the dreaded penalty shoot-out!

-A match is played in two 45 minute halves, by two teams of eleven players each. The game begins with the toss of a coin, and the winning captain decides which goal to defend or to take the first kick off. -All players must use their feet head or chest to play the ball. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to use their hands, and only within their designated goal area. -The aim of the game is to score a goal, which is achieved by kicking or heading the ball into the opposition team's goal. -If the ball touches or crosses the side line, it is thrown back in by the team that was not the last to touch the ball. -The game is controlled by a central referee, and two linesmen. They award free kicks and penalties when rules are broken. For continual breaking of rules or for a bad foul, the player may be sent off.
