Hi! My husband and I have been to Erie only once (driving through), but we fell in love with the area. We are thinking about relocating there after college graduation (next year). This will be a long distance move, so it will be hard for us to visit too many times. I wonder what the job market is like, and housing availability. How family-friendly is the town? What historical/cultural things are there? I read the travel brochures and websites, but I would rather hear it from someone who is a native. Thank you!

I grew up in Erie and lived there until last year (31 years).

The weather varies greatly. Yes, lake effect snow. (I hate snow) But there is a definite difference in the seasons... which is nice.

There is a lot to do in Erie, but most natives take it for granted. You've got Presque Isle beaches, the Playhouse Theatre, The Civic Center, The "Dock", Flagship Niagra, Children's museum, 4 local colleges, lots of festivals in the summer, etc.

Housing is affordable, which I didn't realize until I moved away. a house that sells for $80,000 in Erie, would sell for $120,000 where I live now.

The job market is a little grim, depending on your field. Manufacturing used to be the lifeblood of the city, but the plants are closing and service jobs are growing (retail, food, hotel).

It's really family friendly and most people know each other there. It's a mid-size city, with a small town attitude. Which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. You can get to almost anything within a reasonable drive. (20 minutes tops for most things).

Schools are ok. They all wear uniforms now. There are several catholic and private school options and charter schools too.

The Erie region, especially near Waterford stinks for newcomers. There is a preponderance of discrimination against people from other regions. Your treated like an outcast. Go somewhere else, you will end up hating it here.
