So there is this kid in my class, male, freshmen, who is 4'11and he is really smart too. Everyday during lunch at the cafeteria other kids will throw food at him and make fun of his height. Most of those guys arn't even that tall themselves 5'6-5'9. I could easily make fun of them for being shorter than me but that is just retarded. So what can I do, I can't just fight them and this kid won't tell anyone about it?

Yes, that is retarded. They're just jealous and that's the easiest "reason" to make fun of him. At my high school there was always several teachers that were supposed to be supervising during lunch. Go to your guidance counselor and inform them of this harassment. If you don't want a hassle, tell them you want to stay anonymous.

people do tend to pick on others they see as either weaker than themselves physically or, sometimes, in a group or even alone, will pick on those they see as a threat of some sort--as someone who is smart, or with money, or whatever.

If you are someone who is looked up to(and even if not!!), for more than just your height, then why do you not become a friend to this kid. First of all, he will probably appreciate the friendship, and may end up being a good friend to you. Your presence will also more than likely help to lessen the picking.

People like to pick on the invulnerable. The guy's small and probably super shy and quiet. He probably has few friends and is anti-social. The guy's also super smart. Some smart kids are picked on, sadly.

Small boys are picked on a lot because they are small. Bigger guys ( and this is nature ) want to pick on the small.

Same things with animals. A lion would love to go after a cat, or a smaller lion. Even with snakes. The King Cobra eats other smaller snakes.

I think the answer to this is simple. Those other kids see themselves as bigger and thus feel the need to push around the smaller kids. This is natural in all males of the human species. You can tell those bullies to knock it off, but then they will say that you are protecting him and he can't protect himself. This might actually make it worse for the kid. He needs to step up to the plate and hold his own.

What is being shown by the others is actually fear. They are afraid of something about him that scares them, maybe because he is smart. It doesn't take many smarts to lead a pack of rats.
It is easy for them to pick on the boy because they know that he won't say anything, they also assume that no one will stand up for him. I will guarantee that if you go to his rescue they WILL back down. They have the fear of being shown up. All it takes is one person to stand up and all will go away. You won't have to fight them. All you have to do is challenge them on why they are picking on him, it couldn't because of his height because none of you are that tall, maybe you just like being bullies. You have nothing to loose, and a good friend to gain, maybe he will help you with your math.

Tell them to grow up and that he could make fun of them for being stupid.
