I followed the step by step instructions for the router, and it seemed to connect fine.

Now today I booted up my PC and no connection. on this PC or on the PC downstairs.

I have tried disconnecting the router and resetting it, but it still refuses to work, the only way I can access the internet is if I directly connect this PC to my cable modem, but this means that the other PC downstairs cannot connect as there's no wireless connection for it to connect to.

Having had similar problems with this router before, my question would be whether or not your two PCs say they have a good network connection or not. A lot of times after configuring that router for some reason the computers connected to it start saying things like "Limited or No Connectivity". Usually what this means is that the computer is attached to the router but the router has stopped assigning it an IP address. Normally, a computer hooked into a Linksys router will have an IP address of 192.168.1.x where 'x' is usually a number between 100 and 125. While I've never figured out why these routers suddenly stopped assigning IP addresses, the fix is to manually assign your computers IP addresses. Make sure you're logged into them with Administrator privileges first.

I assume since you are on UK Yahoo Answers and that you mention cable modem that you are using NTL.

I have a similar problem with my Linksys router.

After much diagnosis, I found that the router was not getting the DNS server information from NTL on the first DHCP request.

To sort this out:
Open up Internet Explorer
Type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.
This should bring up a box requesting password.
Leave 1st box empty and put admin in second box (unless you have changed the password yourself).

Click on Status (top right)

Scolll down
Do you see numbers in
IP address - four groups of numbers - not all 0s
Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0
Gateway - four groups of numbers - not all 0s
DNS Server1 - this should be 192.168.4.100 or similar
DNS server2 - this should be 1952.168.8.100 or similar

If you have 0s in any of these, click on DHCP release.
They will all now show 0s
Click on DHCP Renew
You should now have the right numbers in place, if this doesn't work, try DHCP RENEW again.

To save from all this hassle every time, I now leave the cable modem and router switched on all the time.

If you switch off either the router or cable modem, you will need to follow the above procedure again.

i assume you are able to connect with an ethernet twine. If no longer the router is lifeless. i assume which you would be able to click on the wifi icon on your laptop at decrease good and notice the router's SSID. in case you click Setup instant community and re-enter the SSID and the protection key it may connect ok. (If it became unsecured it incredibly is attainable some neighbor could are starting to be on and given it a password to fasten you out.) If it would not, supply it one greater attempt. Press the reset button with a paper clip for 30 seconds. Get out the person instruction manual and set it up lower back with an SSID and a protection key. Then use the wifi icon like above to hook up with the laptop.

When you reset a router it starts you from scratch. The device probably only needed to be power-cycled (un plugged and replugged).

Set it all up again per the instructions.
