I suppose we take a certain number of answers for granted as belief, because we know so little about a subject like outer space. So if we hear someone say that, we assume they heard it from an authority on space, or in some program or the planetarium. We could go check and prove them wrong. But it's also very subjective. We can't go into outer space and count the stars.
Wet paint or some other item that we can physically prove to ourselves is wet or is there, then is a way for us to find out for ourselves. We can take someone's word for it and assume the paint is wet or the floor is wet, but we want to know and we can examine. If it isn't, then we can say without a doubt "no, it's dry" or "yes, it is wet still."
Why do we do this? I don't know.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Because the paint might have dried by the time you wanted to sit on it. It's like asking "Is it still wet?" as opposed to "Was it ever wet?".
They're quite similar, really; both present empirical evidence. Paint is verifiable by touch, stars are verifiable by sight.

Well because, you can't fly your self to space and count every star in the universe, but you can touch the paint. Or either that person could be really, stupid?
