We will never know as long as Bush is President and Neocon trolls continue to try to run interference for the Neocons that are left in office.

Just the news about the surge and the terrorists are presently moving out of Baghdad in large numbers. Perhaps this is a good thing - or perhaps it will complicate the war even more by spreading their tactics of terror and murder to the outlying areas.
A new direction is needed, and if we can agree that immediate withdrawal is not a viable alternative, a troop surge may be just what is needed.
There can be no doubt that the terrorists were pleased with the results of the Nov elections - they expected a cut in funding for the U.S. troops and a quick withdrawal. Imagine how the news of a troop surge screwed up their reorganization plans.
I still believe that this is a war we must win. It's not an easy task - but, somehow, we must put a stop to the indiscriminate slaughter of thousands of innocent men, women and children by a psycho ideology that seeks world domination under Islamic law.
And, face it, if we fail, the Islamic terrorists aren't just going away. Given their history of repeated violence in the face of impunity and apathy, that premise isn't even debatable.

I honestly don’t think the surge will quell the sectarian violence in Iraq, especially since the mere addition of 20,000 troops falls well below the numbers recommended by military experts and generals, who claimed before the occupation, that we would need close to 150,000 to 200,000 more troops than we have now.
To think the addition of 20,000 troops will some how eliminate sectarian bloodshed in Baghdad is like me saying that since me throwing one knife at an armored tank did not destroy the tank, maybe two knives will work.
The surge, quite candidly, is not even a drop in the pan. All this miniscule escalation in troop levels is supposed to do is throw a bone to unthinking conservative twits who think that this war can be won by numbers. The rest of us know that this is political maneuver and that the only way to win a war like this one is a change in strategy. This isn't a change in strategy. This is "stay the course" as usual.

The surge is supposed to help hold areas that have been cleared of insurgents until Iraqi government and security can be set up to maintain the area. It should help gain control of insurgents that retake areas when the military moves on.
It may work and it is better than staying with the current plan.

The point of the surge, the bringing down of Saddam, and the entire BushOilCo policy in the Middle East is to create disorder. The surge is meant to draw Iran into the fray. You will know if it has worked when hegemony is complete from Dubai, to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and finally Iran! And, as an added bonus, when the US Treasury is completely bankrupt, we are close to that now, http://www.uuforum.org/deficit.htm
so that our nation will be completely subservient to international debt holders like China and the other global houses of power. These men mean us harm, and they are well on their way to realizing their dreams. We all better put a stop to this before we are completely powerless to act.

I think it would be like a surge in electrical current that ruins most appliances. Pretty much the same.

It's supposed to quell the violence in Baghdad and bring order back to the city. We'll know if it works if there is a large decline in the number of terrorist bombings in the city. This could take time and it won't be easy, so please just have a little patience.
