My best friend and I will be in San Francisco for just one day. I've been to the China Town Web site, but I can't determine the exact place we should start there. Where will we find the best concentration of shops, etc? The maps I've seen show several square blocks for the district and I don't know where to start. Thanks!

The cable car from the embarcadero will take you into the middle of chinatown (Grant and California). But you can easily walk all of Grant St. which sounds like what you really want to see. Start at Grant and Bush, walk up Grant to Broadway. Keep going a few blocks (up Columbus) and you can visit North Beach too.

J's suggestion for R&G is a robust one. also attempt city View eating position 662 Commerical highway - sturdy dim sum, sensible value. Henry's Hunan on Sacramento at Kearney - extraordinarily spiced and tremendous, do not omit the Diana's Meat Pie

Take the Cable Car into China town, you'll see all the people, you cant miss it.
As with anywhere in SFC, keep a tight grip on your purse/wallet, it's a pick pocketers paradise.
Have fun.
