If you have the wireless network set up in your house, you just need to physically turn on your wireless card in your computer. Check your computer manual for exactly where it is. But usually on laptops, you just hold down your function key and then there should be a button with some wireless signal on it.

You need something for your laptop to connect to. If you have a high-speed connection (cable, DSL, FIOS) your modem may already have a wireless router built in, otherwise you need a wireless router wired to the modem for your laptop to connect with wirelessly.

You need to be in range of a router that has internet. If no one close to you has one, you won't get signal.

You have to be in range of a wireless router.
