This anxiety is normal... believe it or not. The first thing is to figure out which would be worse - a failing grade, or some ribbing from your friends. They also will have to stand behind that podium and will be getting it from you too.

Unless you are required to do something from memory, take three by five cards with an outline like below.. short phrases to remember what you are talking about. talk in front of a mirror tonight. talk in front of family. say your speech over and over. not exactly the same each time, just make the same points.

I never found the underwear trick to work. (imagining audience in their underwear) deep breaths; start talking.

three paragraphs is under two minutes. It may be a long two minutes, but I am sure they can be gotten through

Card ideas
I. Intro
my name - john smith
my topic - velocity of laden swallows

II (second card)
main point one - African swallows
sub point one - size
sub point two - weight

III (third card)
main point one - European swallows
sub point one - size
sub point two - weight

IV - conclusion
African better
bigger bird
etc

I get very nervous in front of large audiences, too. Many people do. You are not alone!

Here is a trick you can use... instead of looking directly AT your audience, look just over the heads of the people in the very last row. No one will notice you're doing this. It will simply look as if you are looking straight ahead at your audience. And you won't become as nervous if you don't have to make direct eye contact with individual people.

Also, remember that everyone is just as nervous as you are when they have to make a class presentation! But your friends, your teacher, and everyone else in that class WANTS you to succeed. REALLY!!! They don't want to see you fail. Even if they're not saying it out loud, they're all secretly cheering you on because they've all been in your shoes and know what it's like. And some of them will be so worried and nervous about having to go up AFTER you that they won't even be paying attention to you!

That brings me to another good point... If you have a choice, always volunteer to go FIRST. I always do this if I can. There are many reasons to do this... first of all, if the teacher asks for a volunteer... just by raising your hand and asking to get up there first PROVES to everyone in class that you are CONFIDENT in yourself and have NO FEAR. And that simple act alone will make you FEEL more confident, too, trust me! Second..... if you have to sit through 30 minutes of other people's presentations, that only means you will have had 30 minutes longer to dread your own. And by the time it is your turn, you will be a nervous, nauseous, shaking, sweating WRECK. Better to just go first, get it over with, then sit back and relax, knowing you are DONE while everyone else has to face the hot seat!!!! The third and final reason to go first..... when you are the opening act, you don't have to follow anyone else which means you end up looking good no matter what you do! There's nothing worse that having to present your own thing right after the class genius or little Miss Personality goes up. Am I right???

And finally....... probably the MOST important thing to do is BREATHE!!!!! Sounds simple enough, but if you don't breathe you will NOT be able to function up there normally. I get nervous in front of a large audience A LOT and actually forget to breathe. Then I feel as if I cannot catch my breathe and suddenly it's like a panic attack up there in front of everyone. Next thing I know is I'm having to stop to take long, drawn-out breathes that feel like forever and I'm forgetting my lines. I end up looking terrible and it's all because I forgot to breathe! So make sure you take natural pauses during your presenation to simply take in air. It will make you feel so much better.

Hope that helps.....GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

It helps if you look over their heads to the back of the room. Concentrate on your presentation. Take deep breaths before you get up. Don't talk too fast, breathe, and relax - they won't eat you. I used to be like this, but I found out that by knowing my material, concentrating on the presentation, and doing the stare over their heads routine, that I soon overcame my fears of being laughed at. Remember, their time in the saddle is coming up, so they may be having difficulties too. They are no better than you, so get in there and show them you can do it. Good luck.

Well you need to do some crazy things in public. Like go to the mall and just present it right there in front of all those people. Who cares what they think you will never see any of them again and it will give you good practice. Are you can do this any where in a crowded public place. That was just the first place I thought of. Good luck!!

There is an old joke about this....the number one fear for all people is Speaking in public, the number two fear is dying. What that means is most of us would rather be in the casket, than speaking to the people attending the funeral. Ok now that I got that out of the way......practice with your family or friends....practice in front of a mirror.....remember....you are the only one who really knows what you are going to say so if you screw up, you will probably be the only one who knows you screwed up. The only way to get over it is to do more of it. Sorry, no magic answer on this one.

Same thing used to happen to me. You just have to relax, take a deep breath and speak slowly but forcefully.

ask the teacher if you can present to just them after class, or ask if you can have your freinds come up with you, so you won't be up there all alone.
