S = Single
P= Pole
D= Double
T= Throw

This basically means your switch has a single pole or single set of terminals. Double throw means the switch can be set in 2 directions.

The long/middle terminal is common to both 'throws'. You would use that as a common for the two throws, on a car it woudl serve as the negative ground connection, while the other two poles might serve as the on for the right thing-a-ma-bob and the left thing-a-ma-jig.

Centre (long) terminal is for supply. THe switch can then connect the supply to either of the other two terminals depending on which way the switch is 'thrown'

The middle terminal is for the hot (positive) and the other two are for the negatives.
