a video card allows you to plug a monitor or tv or display device into your computer to have visual output. the output device depends on what card it is. you can get rid of it, but if you do not have one in your computer at that point, you cannot actively use your computer.

A video card is what is used by the computer to transfer information from the processor to the screen. Can you get rid of it? Yes, but I wouldn't! The grapics from the motherboard is poor compare to a good video card. No good video card, no games...or much of anything anymore.

You need to have a video card (either a separate card or built into the motherboard) to be able to see anything.
