I followed the step by step instructions for the router, and it seemed to connect fine.

Now today I booted up my PC and no connection. on this PC or on the PC downstairs.

I have tried disconnecting the router and resetting it, but it still refuses to work, the only way I can access the internet is if I directly connect this PC to my cable modem, but this means that the other PC downstairs cannot connect as there's no wireless connection for it to connect to.

Try unplugging both the router and cable modem. Wait 15 seconds then plug only the cable modem in. When the cable modem shows solid lights, plug in the router. Wireless signals can also be disrupted by other 2.4 GHz sources: other networks, cordless phones, microwave ovens.
