The recommended amount is 500 songs. However, it all depends on the quality of the music you are putting onto your iPod. Most cds are of 192 quality and the 500 songs is based on 128 quality and 3 minutes long. The lower the quality the smaller the file, therefore, the better the quality the bigger the file. If you download music there's always an option as to what quality you'd like to download.

Honestly, the difference isn't that bad between 192 and 128 if its for ipod/computer listening - alhtough I always download at 192.

Most iPods don't go by song number, but by memory. if you have any really long songs, it won't hold 500. i think its based on a 4minute song thing.. it will hold 500 songs if they are all roughly 3.5-4 min long, but if the average is larger it will hold less or something like that.

the only way you can donwload 500 songs onto your ipod is to choose songs that are 3-4 minutes long. plus it depends on the size of the songs you have on your ipod as well.

As well as the compression and file types, when you format your ipod, it does use a small amount of space (which isn't 100 songs worth...but it is still taking away from the total storage capacity).

500 song is only an indication ,it depends really on the file sizes
, which depends on the lenght of the songs & the compression ratio
ie 128kB/sec of 64kB/sec etc

It also assumes AAC compression, rather than MP3 (AAC is a more efficient compression scheme)
