I think you need to prove to your parents that you're ready for a 4-5 year commitment :)
There's more to keeping a betta than just sticking it in a bowl. Lots of people do this and then wonder why they die after a few months.
I think what would impress your parents, and help educate you about bettas, would be to write a report on them. You know, a 2 or 3 page report about how / where they live in the wild, how they live in captivity, what they eat, what temperature their water needs to be, how you will clean the bowl, and then detail a list of what you will need to buy for your betta along with prices and what you will do make the money (like chores or whatever - if you don't have money already, that is).
Once your report is finished and proof-read, present it to your parents over dinner. If that doesn't impress them, nothing will.

Feel free to YM or e-mail me if you would like a hand :)

Good luck! My parents let me have a fish eventually... maybe it wasn't a great idea because now I have a million tanks (don't tell your parents that though ;))

you can check for adoptions on craigslist.com. some people will give them away. as long as its your parents money you have to spend it in ways they see fit. i am sure they have your best interest in mind or something like that. it can be very expensive to start -- i just had to buy antibiotics for mine -- $15.00. that is an emergency trip to the pet store and 15 dollars and a lot of hassle cutting up the little packets into little betta doses. then before i administered it i did a 3/4 water change because i know i can't change any water for 5 days. its not that easy all the time so your parents might just be looking out for you and for themselves -- don't forget until you can buy things yourself and drive yourself around yourself your betta is their responsibility too.

I love bettas.I have 2 males and just recently got a female.I am going to try to breed her.You can get one at your local walmart for $3 and a 2 side bowl for $5 that way you can talk your parents into getting 2.

I love bettas. They are so beautiful. What I think you should do is to ask your parents for a shark. Then, when they say no say goldfish, when they say no, ask them for a betta and they'll say yes. I'm a pro at this. =]

I'm guessing if you are old enough to type this question, you are old enough to buy a fish. Where I live you can get one in a bowl for $6
