Could this be the explanation why prayer and meditation works to a degree - especially in large numbers? Or do you consider it a placebo effect and nothing more?

The Placebo effect is also influenced by our mind. This is a very good example (scientifically proved - good for skeptics).
Just try to observe things that happen around you. Your mind influences your reality more than you think.
Meditation and prayer work well because these are two very good ways of focusing our mind/thoughts on a certain matter/desire/etc. It works even better when there are more persons involved because the amount of positive vibrations is bigger and therefore more efficient. However, there are people who can influence very well by themselves. It depends on how much you believe in these things. It also takes a lot of practice.

I think the mind influences everything we do. Prayer works because of the power of positive thinking. By the way what a great question!

I think it is more the "influential factor" personally.

If we say we're going to pray about you getting better and you know that 10,000 of them are out there doing it. You might be more inclined to heal yourself out of feeling that you SHOULD be getting better with so many people out there chanting and waving chicken bones in the air.
